Inlays and Onlays in Winnipeg
Our office uses tooth-colored inlays and onlays that provide our patients with the most natural-looking restorations possible.
When full coverage dental crowns are unnecessary Dr. Winchar will often recommend inlays or onlays to patients. Inlays and onlays are actually two different types of restorative solutions used to repair a tooth that has damage in the center of a tooth (inlay) or damage that requires repair beyond the center of the biting surface (onlay).
Our office uses tooth-colored inlays and onlays that provide our patients with the most natural-looking restorations possible.
What are Inlays and Onlays used to Correct?
Inlays and onlays are used to repair the back teeth that suffer from mild to moderate decay, have cracked or fractured, and are damaged but not so much that they require a crown. Generally a standard dental filling can be used to treat mild cases of the aforementioned maladies however dental inlays and onlays are used when there is too much decay or damage to the tooth structure and dictate are more appropriate restoration.
Dental inlays and onlays can also be used to replace old fillings that are either aesthetically unattractive or because the old filling has cracked, been damaged or has fallen out.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays?
When a standard filling isn’t sufficient, inlays and onlays offer a conservative and effective approach to restoring teeth. Dr. Morgan Winchar at Linden Market Dental Centre prioritizes “minimally invasive dentistry,” meaning he strives to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. While full-coverage crowns are necessary for severe damage or decay, inlays and onlays are ideal solutions when less invasive treatments are appropriate, allowing for a healthier, more natural outcome.
One of the many benefits of inlays and onlays is their material. Made from high-quality porcelain, these restorations not only blend seamlessly with your teeth but are also more resistant to discoloration compared to traditional resin fillings. Their durability and stability ensure a long-lasting restoration, providing both functionality and aesthetics for years to come.
A Standard Procedure for Long-Lasting Results
The process of placing inlays and onlays typically requires two visits to the dental office. During the first appointment, the damaged tooth is cleaned and prepared, and an impression is taken to create the custom inlay or onlay. This impression is sent to a dental lab, and a temporary restoration is placed to protect your tooth until the permanent piece is ready.
Once the permanent inlay or onlay is returned from the lab, your temporary restoration is removed, and Dr. Winchar carefully fits and tests the new piece for optimal form and function. After ensuring it fits perfectly, the restoration is permanently cemented in place, leaving your tooth protected and restored.
