When a patient is missing one or more teeth but may not be a good candidate for dentures or dental implants, Dr. Rykiss can use a porcelain restoration to literally bridge the gap between teeth. A dental bridge from our restorative dentistry team is a replacement tooth crafted of the finest porcelain, and held into place with crowns placed on the teeth surrounding the open space. Not only do porcelain dental bridges complete the appearance of a patient’s smile, they serve an important function by preventing surrounding teeth from shifting position and they help protect against bacteria and decay that can inhabit the place where a tooth used to be.
Dental Bridge Procedure
As mentioned above, a dental bridge contains dental crowns that physically work to hold the bride in place. Before a bridge can be used to span the gap where the missing tooth or teeth are, Dr. Rykiss will need to prepare the surrounding teeth so that the crowns can be properly attached to your teeth. The teeth are first reduced, and then an impression is taken to create a mold for the creation of the crown. Temporary crowns and bridgework will be placed until the permanent restorations come back from the dental lab.
Once the restoration arrives custom-made from the lab, the temporary is removed and the new crowns and bridge are attached and checked for form, fit and function. If everything looks good, the crowns and affixed bridge are permanently cemented to your previously prepared teeth.
CEREC Crown and Bridge in a Day
For patients who are looking for the ultimate in convenience and computer precision, CEREC crowns and bridges are the way to go. Dr. Rykiss has invested in CEREC computer technology that affords patients same-day crown and bridge restorations. CEREC utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) technology and computerized images to help create restorations in a single visit.
The impressions are done digitally and this information is sent wirelessly to the milling machine where custom-made porcelain crowns and bridges are created quickly and accurately. Patients no longer have to go through the discomforts of messy impression materials, don’t have to wear temporaries, and don’t have to wait weeks for their permanent restorations to arrive from the lab.
Dental Implants: Dental Bridge Alternative
For patients who want the ultimate in tooth replacement technology, inquire about dental implants. Dental implants are surgically implanted into the tooth root and are considered to be the best restoration for patients with missing teeth. Although they are more expensive than other tooth replacement options, dental implants offer the closest resemblance and function to natural teeth that is available today.
